In 1925, in Stellenbosch South Africa, Prof. A.I. Perold used only 4 seedlings to cross Pinot Noir and Cinsault to create the Pinotage grape. He brought together the subtle yet zesty multi-layered flavours of Pinot Noir with the tolerance of the Cinsault grape – a smooth blend.
Pinotage is ‘coming of age’ and fast becoming the grape ‘celebrity’ that everyone wants to meet – full of humour, tradition and culture that’s grown almost exclusively in South Africa. It produces deep red wines high in tannins with smoky dark fruit flavors accented by earthy bramble characteristics.
I am immensely proud that Prof Perold has not only given me my name, but a life of passion and purpose – to introduce the world to this remarkable grape, my Pinotage!
